Transportation to the Old City

To reach Sultanahmet, we use Istanbul’s modern public tram system, the fastest and most efficient way to travel between districts and avoid heavy city traffic.

The tram ride also provides a glimpse into everyday life in Istanbul as we travel across the Golden Horn toward the historic peninsula.

Public transportation tickets are not included. Guests can easily pay using their own contactless credit cards.

During the tour our tour guide will arrenge the skip the line tickets at the entry of Hagia Sophia and Basilica Cistern

Stop 1: Hagia Sophia

Our first stop is one of the most extraordinary monuments in the world.

Originally built in 537 AD as the largest cathedral of the Byzantine Empire, Hagia Sophia later became an imperial Ottoman mosque and remains one of the most important landmarks of Istanbul today.

Just across the square stands the famous Blue Mosque, one of the finest examples of classical Ottoman architecture.

Built in the early 17th century, this active mosque is known for its harmonious design and beautiful interior decoration.

Inside you will see:

Next, we walk through the historic square that once served as the political and social center of Byzantine Constantinople.

In ancient times, this was the location of spectacular chariot races and imperial ceremonies attended by thousands of spectators.

Important monuments still standing today include:

• The Obelisk of Theodosius
• The Serpent Column from Delphi
• The Walled Obelisk

Your guide will share the dramatic stories of rival chariot teams and the famous Nika Revolt, one of the most important events in Byzantine history.

Stop 4: Basilica Cistern

From the bright square above ground we descend into the mysterious underground world of the Basilica Cistern.

Built in the 6th century during the reign of Emperor Justinian, this vast underground reservoir once supplied water to the Great Palace of Constantinople.

Inside the cistern you will discover:

• 336 marble columns rising from the water
